As empaths, highly sensitive people (HSPs), and hyper-thinkers, we often find ourselves grappling with racing thoughts, vivid imaginations, and an overwhelming capacity to process numerous thoughts simultaneously. While this quick thinking can serve us well, it can often lead to feelings of being overwhelmed. Our minds can become a whirlwind, and our nervous systems frazzled. Thus, engaging in practices that soothe the mind and calm the nervous system is essential – practices such as mindfulness and embodiment techniques like breathwork.
For those of us who are sensitive by nature, discovering ways to shift our focus to something calm is not merely beneficial; it’s crucial. Engaging in soothing hobbies such as painting, photography, or even watching nurturing content (for me, it’s the enchanting Joanna Jinton) can have profound effects. Getting lost in a book, whether fiction or nonfiction, can provide a much-needed escape and help anchor us in moments of chaos.
However, integrating these nurturing practices into our lives is often challenging. The weight of endless to-do lists can feel heavy, and when we do carve out time for ourselves, it’s often accompanied by guilt for being “lazy.” This mindset needs to shift.
We must strike a delicate balance. Society conditions us to ask, “Have I done enough today to earn my rest?” Instead, we should reframe this question to: “Have I rested enough to give my full energy and ability to the work I am doing?” This shift in perspective is crucial for our well-being.
Our current societal framework – marked by relentless bills, demanding jobs, and an endless cycle of responsibilities – often does not cater to our needs. It’s an environment where sensitivity can be misconstrued as a weakness, and the pressures can feel unbearable.
I consider myself fortunate to be in the process of creating a life where I can choose my work, my hours, my collaborators, and my rest. This level of autonomy is something that many are striving for. I see countless women (and undoubtedly men and others) paving the way toward lives outside traditional systems. These trailblazers are not merely dreaming of a different life; they are actively building it and guiding others to do the same.
This shift is not just a desire; it’s a necessity. Many of us feel as though we are drowning in the corporate world, becoming physically and emotionally ill in a society built on harshness, competition, and a disregard for sensitivity. And we are not alone.
There is a burgeoning movement toward creating a new world for sensitives, heart-centred individuals, and softly strong souls who do not fit into the existing mould. We are forging a path toward a different existence because we recognise that our sensitivity is not a flaw but rather a strength.
As the renowned author and philosopher, Anaïs Nin, once said, “We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” This quote resonates deeply with our journey. By shifting our focus to something softer, we are not only nurturing ourselves but also contributing to the creation of a more understanding and supportive society.
We do not fit into this world for a reason. There is another world out there – one that values empathy, compassion, and gentleness. By switching our focus to softer pursuits, we can reclaim our power and honour our true selves.
When we focus on softness, we unveil the strength of our sensitivity, illuminating a path for ourselves and others.
So, take a moment. Breathe. Find what soothes you and make it a priority. The world needs your sensitivity, and you deserve a life that honours it.
